Data protection laws can be complex, but we’re here to simplify them for you. Let us guide your company through its responsibilities, making compliance easier and more efficient.

The Law

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) concerns all companies and organisations of European Union member states when using personal data.
‘Personal Data’ is any information that relates to an identified or identifiable living individual (ie name/surname, profession, mobile number, family status etc).
The regulation started on 25 May 2018. For the protection of the personal data they hold, all companies and organisations must follow the rules deriving from GDPR.
Non-compliance with GDPR can lead to negative results, such as administrative fines and compensations for the owners of personal data in case of unlawful use of their data. It can also cause bad reputation and customer loss due to the breach of trust and negative publicity.
In Greece, the GDPR and other data protection legislation is enforced by the Hellenic Data Protection Authority.
The Hellenic Data Protection Authority oversees both EU and Greek data protection regulations, ensuring compliance with critical laws:

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR – EU Regulation 2016/679): The
primary European regulation for personal data protection.

Law 4624/2019: Adapts GDPR to Greek law, specifying additional responsibilities for the Hellenic Data Protection Authority.

Law 3471/2006: Regulates privacy in electronic communications, addressing issues such as cookies and direct marketing, based on Directive 2002/58/EC (ePrivacy Directive).

Upcoming ePrivacy Regulation: The EU’s proposed regulation that will replace the
ePrivacy Directive, focusing on online personal data protection.

The Hellenic Data Protection Authority also ensures compliance with other EU directives and regulations indirectly related to data processing. This includes Directive 2016/680, which safeguards data in law enforcement and judicial contexts, establishing standards for handling personal data during police and judicial activities.
